Peter Puklus is an artist presently residing and working in Budapest, Hungary. He pursued his photography studies at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest (MOME), and furthered his education in new media design at École National Supérieur de Création Industriel (ENSCI) in Paris.
Puklus serves or has served as an occasional or recurring lecturer and workshop leader in different institutions related to art and photography such as MOME in Budapest, ÉCAL in Lausanne, CEPV in Vevey, HSLU in Luzern, HfBK in Hamburg, Bauhaus University in Dessau, FAMU and UMPRUM in Prague or UJEP in Ústí nad Labem.
In 2012, Puklus published two noteworthy photo-books: ‘One and a half meter’ in collaboration with Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg, and ‘Handbook to the Stars’ with Stokovec, Banská Stiavnica. His third photobook, ‘The Epic Love Story of a Warrior,’ was published in 2016 in partnership with Self Publish, Be Happy, London, and was shortlisted for the Aperture / Paris Photo Photobook Award 2016.
Puklus has held recent solo exhibitions, including ‘Close watch’ at Klotz Shows, Bruxelles, ‘I’ve been lying my whole life’ at Ferenczy Múzeumi Centrum, Szentendre, Hungary, ‘My language is not silence’ at Glassyard Gallery, Budapest, ‘Life is Techno’ at Trafó Gallery, Budapest, ‘New Works’ at Conrads Gallery, Düsseldorf, ‘Unsafe to Dance’ at C/O Berlin, Berlin, ‘One and a half meter’ at Robert Morat Gallery, Berlin, and ‘The Epic Love Story of a Warrior’ at Capa Center, Budapest, and Raster Gallery, Warsaw , Poland.
Puklus’s recently finished project, titled ‘The Hero Mother – How to build a house,’ was awarded the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2017–2018. Related visibility such as artist talks, videos and workshops for this project include solo exhibitions under the same title at Spazio Labo’, Bologna, Klotz Shows, Bruxelles, Glassyard Gallery, Budapest, Mediterranean Museum, Gibellina, and Espace Images Vevey . The project was published as an artist book under the same title in collaboration with Witty Books and Image Vevey in October 2021.
While the essence of Puklus’s works always revolves around the photographic perspective, he has recently ventured into unexplored territories beyond the confines of the wooden frame. His recent projects encompass sculptures, objects, paintings, installations, drawings, and videos. Storytelling plays a pivotal role, whether presented in gallery spaces or in the form of photo-books. Puklus skillfully merges diverse genres and media, establishing meaningful connections between them. Notably, his most recent solo exhibitions, such as ‘I’ve been lying my whole life’ at Ferenczy Múzeumi Centrum, Szentendre, Hungary, ‘You told I had beautiful hands’ at Artkartell projectspace, Budapest, ‘My language is not silence’ at Glassyard Gallery, Budapest in 2021, and the group shows Modern Love, National Museum of Contemporary Arts, Athens or ‘Metaphysical Passage Through a Zebra’ at Ludwig Museum, Budapest , prominently feature oil on canvas paintings, tufted rugs, and wooden installations, often intertwined with photography and other media.
Puklus is represented by Glassyard Gallery in Budapest , Robert Morat Gallery in Berlin , and Klotz Shows, Bruxelles .
